California Healthy Marriages Coalition

Organization Description
The California Healthy Marriages Coalition (CHMC) empowers marriage- and family-support coalitions throughout the State of California. The mission of CHMC is to build a coalition of coalitions that will forge the capacity needed for families throughout California to have greater access to Relationship Skills Training (RST) programs. RST equips families with the skills and knowledge necessary to form and sustain a healthy marriage and family, overcome the risk of gang influence and involvement, and make the transition from welfare to work.

Project Description
The California Healthy Marriages Project will develop and nurture a coalition of coalitions to help families within California have greater access to programs that will equip them with the skills and knowledge necessary to form and sustain a healthy marriage and family, overcome the risk of gang influence and involvement, and make the transition from welfare to work.

Geographic Scope of Project
The State of California.

Sub-Awards
CHMC will offer a total of $250,000 in sub-awards to approximately 20 competitively selected coalitions and organizations to help build their capacity as they work to build healthy marriages and families.

Priority Areas
Marriage education and preparation services to help couples form and sustain healthy marriages; at-risk youth; and families in transition from welfare to work.

Project Objectives
Through the Healthy Marriage & Families Project, CHMC will assist marriage- and family-strengthening coalitions and organizations throughout California to increase sustainability and effectiveness, enhance their ability to provide social services, diversify their funding sources, and create collaborations to better serve those in need. CHMC will accomplish these objectives by providing training, technical assistance, and sub-awards to selected grassroots faith-based and community organizations (FBCOs) to build their organizational capacity in the five critical areas of capacity building.

Project Strategy
CHMC will foster the development of approximately 20 marriage- and family-support coalitions/organizations around the state—enabling grassroots organizations to maximize their social impact in providing Relationship Skills Training (RST) services, and becoming the country’s first statewide coalition of coalitions working to support healthy marriages and families.

Project Outcomes
This project will lead to an increase in capacity, effectiveness, service-level offerings and sustainability of the marriage- and family-strengthening coalitions and organizations participating in this project, which will result in an increase in the availability and accessibility of Relationship Skills Training (RST) services throughout the state—enabling a greater number of California residents to obtain the skills and knowledge necessary to form and sustain a healthy marriage and family, overcome the risk of gang influence and involvement, and make the transition from welfare to work.

                    The Mission of the

California Healthy Marriage Coalition

The mission of ACF’s National Healthy Marriage Initiative is - “To help couples, who have chosen marriage for themselves, gain greater access to marriage education services, on a voluntary basis, where they can acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to form and sustain a healthy marriage.”

The mission of CHMC flows from that and could be stated as - “To help couples within California, who have chosen marriage for themselves, gain greater access to marriage education services, on a voluntary basis, where they can acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to form and sustain a healthy marriage.”

Our primary strategy is to “birth”, “nurture”, and “develop” all of the marriage-related coalitions that spring up throughout the state.

These coalitions need to be representative of the people of California – across three dimensions:

Geography

Ethnicity and cultures – with strong recognition of cultural variations and sensitivities

Faith expression (or lack thereof)

Faith based, community based and government/social services

All faith expressions encouraged to organize and to participate – to bring Marriage Education back to their own constituents

We are a “Coalition of Coalitions”.

Three characteristics of a successful local Community Healthy Marriage Initiative/Coalition – (“best practices”)

Web-based Community Marriage Resource Center (CMRC)

Strong Community Marriage Policy (CMP)

Localized Marriage Education Leadership Training readily available

The presence of all three of those components creates an environment in which Marriage Education can become readily available and accessible to all members of a community….which fulfills upon our mission.

We wholeheartedly believe in the practice of “spreading of good corn” through:

Replication of “best practices” – a key role of this coalition can be (should be) to develop, identify, and replicate Best Practices within Marriage Education within and between all of the local coalitions within the state

Strong emphasis on program evaluation – so everyone can see “what works and what doesn’t work” – so we know what “good corn” looks like.

Generous sharing of ourselves with other coalition members

Overall summary – the role of a statewide California Healthy Marriages Coalition can be summed up in two words – Service and Empowerment – of the local community marriage coalitions. The strength of the Statewide coalition only comes from the strength of the local (typically county-level) coalitions.

Remember the three dimensions – geography, ethnicity and agency-type – need to develop all three dimensions for this movement to really “take” and be effective throughout the state.
